Services
As a composer, I am constantly in search of new projects. I have worked as a composer on the professional and academic fields for nearly ten years, and have frequently collaborated across various disciplines.
Additionally, I have worked extensively in Finale and Sibelius, and have worked over the past several years with several composers on various copying, notation, and data input projects.
I also offer private music composition and theory instruction.

Commissions
I am currently accepting requests for commissions. Rates vary according to
each individual project, with the main factors being size of ensemble and the
length of the work.
Engraving/Notation Services
Need an old score input into a software program? Have a handwritten
project but lack the means to convert it into a digital file? I offer
transcription, notation, and raw data entry services on either Sibelius 5 or
Finale 2006. I will enter your score into either program, maintaining the
formatting specifications you desire.
Rates are $12 per hour. Standard service includes raw data entry, including
all markings and notations appearing in the original score, plus all necessary
formatting adjustments. Once the project is completed, I will send you an
email which will include: 1) the digital file (either .sib or .mus), 2) a PDF of
the printed score, and 3) an itemized invoice indicating the total cost of the
project. Any slight modifications required after reviewing the score will be
performed at no additional charge. Inclusion of a MIDI realization of the
score (.mid, .mp3, .wav, or .aif) is also available free of charge if requested. A
comb-bound copy of the score (card stock front and back cover, acid-free
paper printed double-sided) will be mailed at customer’s request for an
additional $5 charge, for scores up to 20 pages, with an additional $5 charge
for every ten pages thereafter.
Instruction
Overview:
Serious music students often begin their pursuit of an academic or
professional career in the field long before entering college through private
lessons in performance, yet many students do not take their first music theory
class or their first composition lesson until they are enrolled at a college or
university. The result often leads to very advanced performers dealing with
deficiencies at the most fundamental levels of theory when beginning their
college careers due to a lack of experience in the subject.
Now students can prevent such a disadvantage by learning theory and
composition from an experienced professional in the field. Lessons are
designed for serious students grades 8 and above who are seeking to expand
and sharpen their skills in order to prepare for a professional and/or
academic career in the field of music. Each student receives a personalized
lesson plan, tailored to the student’s individual goals and desires. I strive to
make each lesson valuable and informative, yet enjoyable and practical.
It is my goal to make this an affordable and worthwhile experience for the
student. I am confident my rates combined with my personal dedication,
attention to detail, and professional experience make this the best deal
available anywhere.
Lesson types and rates:
Note: All lessons held on either a weekly or biweekly basis. Students will be
charged on a lesson-by-lesson basis, and will not be charged for missed
weeks. However, students will be expected to remain committed and
responsible. Repeated unannounced absenteeism will not be allowed.
Music theory studies ($30 per lesson, 30 minutes):
Designed primarily for students with a focus on musical performance but
available to any student seeking to gain a better grasp on the concepts of
music theory, lesson plans will vary according to the student’s familiarity with
the subject matter. Beginning students will focus on fundamental aspects of
theory, with more advanced students delving into topics of counterpoint,
voice leading, analysis, ear training and keyboard harmony.
At the initial meeting, the student will discuss his/her musical experience,
background, and goals, then take a brief written assessment of various
fundamental concepts of music theory. The following six weeks of lessons
will consist of working toward specific instructor and student goals as
determined by the initial meeting and written assessment. There will be “in-
class” work as well as “take home” assignments. At the end of the first six-
week session, the student and instructor will set a new set of goals.
Composition studies ($30 per lesson, 30 minutes):
Designed for beginning to intermediate students of composition, these lessons
provide a student with fundamentals tools to become a student of both music
theory and composition. The balance between music theory and composition
in each lesson depend upon the student’s background in theory, with more
intermediate students focusing more on composition. All students will receive
instruction on leading music notation/engraving programs (Finale and
Sibelius), with intermediate students also receiving basic instruction on music
technology/recording programs.
At the initial meeting, the student will discuss his/her musical experience,
background, and goals, then take a brief written assessment on various
fundamental concepts of music theory. Students who have already written
compositions should bring whatever scores available to be studied and
reviewed. The following six weeks of lessons will consist of working toward
specific instructor and student goals as determined by the initial meeting and
written assessment. At the end of the first six-week session, the student and
instructor will set a new set of goals. Additionally, the instructor and student
will establish a long-term composition project (usually for one to five
instruments) that will be reviewed each week until its completion.
Advanced composition studies ($50 per lesson, 60 minutes):
Designed for students with a solid background in music theory and with
significant experience in composition, these lessons will focus on specific
nuances of the craft of composition, incorporating advanced instrumentation
and orchestration techniques, counterpoint and voice leading, and motivic
development and pitch set collections. The instructor will determine which
students qualify for advanced composition studies at the initial half-hour
meeting by reviewing the student’s compositions. Student and instructor will
determine short-term and long-term goals, and lessons will focus primarily on
student’s compositional work. Student will be expected to be familiar (or to
become familiar) with at least one music notation software program (Finale,
Sibelius), and instruction will be provided in such a program as necessary.
Student will also receive elementary instruction in music technology software
(Audacity, ProTools, Peak, etc.).
